A Survey on the Status of Ready-made Reading Spectacles for the Senior Aged 65 and Over in Daegu Region
Jung Ji-Won

Abstract
Purpose : This study is to confirm the importance of correcting glasses for presbyopia by examining the actual use of ready-made spectacles (RMS) with those aged 65 years and over, which require maximum near-corrective refractive power in Daegu region.

Methods : Objective refraction and subjective refraction were applied to 144 eyes of 77 elderly (male: 24, female: 53) aged 65 and over wearing RMS living in Daegu. Far and near PD (working distance 40 cm) were measured using a PD meter. The prism effect caused by the difference in distance between the participants' measured PD and the optical center point of RMS was analyzed using the Prentice formula. A questionnaire was also conducted and analyzed about the place where RMS was purchased, the presence or absence of related testing and satisfaction from experts.

Results : The average astigmatism refractive power of ametropia was ?1.18¡¾0.47 D (p<0.001, z=-9.414), and 0.75~1.00 D uncorrected of astigmatism showed the highest rate of 38.46%. It was shown that BI prism was 16.67% and the BO prism 77.78%, and the power of BI prism induced in esophoria was 0.65¡¾0.15 ¥Ä, and the power of the BO prism induced in the exophoria was 1.34¡¾0.81 ¥Ä. In the total, 61.04% showed that they simply purchased at a place such as the street without testing required for near-use glasses such as refraction.
Regarding their satisfaction with RMS, more than half of them, 61.52%, answered that they had discomfort with RMS they are currently wearing, and ¡®blurred text¡¯ was the main cause.

Conclusion : As a result of this study, it was confirmed that RMS was uncomfortable due to the non-correction of astigmatism, low addition, and mismatch between the pupil distance and the optical center point of the lens. It seems that the importance of expert testing and social and systemic changes are needed for accurate prescription and eyeglasses.
